Bravo for this! The charm of the German parenthetical exclamation point is reflected so brightly, sharply, and beautifully in its English translation. The inserted astonishment comes across as wholly reasonable in the translation. I especially appreciate the subtle difference between the German "(?!)" and the English "(!?)". Parenthetical exclamation points are second only to implied exclamation points (Mark Twain used one in Huckleberry Finn, as discovered by critic Michael Egan in 1977).
